What's On My Bookshelf? - Andy Williams

In each issue of the Penarth View magazine we ask a Griffin Books customer to give us three recommended reads.  Local deputy headteacher Andy Williams selected the following:

Motivational Interviewing (by Prof Steven Rollnick and Prof Bill Miller)

As a leader in a relatively large organisation I have over the years found that change leadership requires a good deal of skill and strategy. In this book Miller and Rollnick provide a clear and well researched frame for conversation around change. Even though their work is centred in healthcare, the structure they provide is easily transferrable to education, sports coaching, business development and other settings. My own motivation for change has been challenged through reading this book and it has transformed my approach to motivating others.

The Biology of Desire (by Prof Marc Lewis)

The well-being of young people in schools is further developed I believe through high quality teaching and learning. Over my many years in the teaching profession I have learnt so much from the pupils it has been my privilege to teach. Some of my students have suffered from a range of addictive behaviours. This book explores why treatment based on the disease model often fails and offers a different understanding that models treatment on habits of mind, the recent neuroscience of learning and years of professional experience.

The Moon and Sixpence (by W. Somerset Maugham)

If you ever have the opportunity to travel to Paris then I recommend you take this novel along with you. Make your way to Montmartre, find a café that you feel at ease in, sit and then absorb this wonderful book. A caricature of Edwardian conventions juxtaposed with the mind of an artistic genius, it spoke to me of freedom, duty and responsibility.
