What's On My Bookshelf? - Rhianon Holley

In each issue of the Penarth View magazine we ask a Griffin Books customer to give us three recommended reads.  Rhianon Holley selected the following:

The Pillars of the Earth (by Ken Follett)

The first book of the Kingsbridge series (the third instalment is due out this autumn) from the Cardiff born author is an epic saga set during the twelfth century.  Based around the building of a cathedral, the fractured lives of the villagers from every walk of life are explored.  Told with astonishing attention to detail, this novel has everything you could wish for and is a great form of escapism - I’m eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.

The Goldfinch (by Donna Tartt)

A finely crafted novel; there was an eleven year gap before the author released this book, and the Pulitzer prize winning story was well worth the wait.  Following the death of his mother in a terrorist attack, teenager Theo leaves the devastating scene with Carel Fabritius’ masterpiece ‘The Goldfinch’ - the painting then provides the connecting link throughout.  An emotional and poignant story that resonated on different levels and one I can’t recommend highly enough.

Restoration (by Rose Tremain)

It’s difficult to imagine but Rose Tremain has achieved a career that spans 40 years.  With such a strong backlist, the book that stands out for me is Restoration, set in the seventeenth century and following the escapades of Merivel as he aims to serve his monarch, Charles II.  Superbly written, Merivel’s distinctive character is a particular draw as it’s such a unique voice.  A truly vibrant and enjoyable tale with brilliant prose that managed to transport me to that historical period, plus there’s a sequel following the character’s journey.
