Will Millard Event - 9/3/18

After being postponed for a week due to snow (thanks to everyone for being understanding about this!), we finally had our event with Will Millard, TV fisherman and presenter on the very rainy evening of 9th March.

Given the weather and the changed date, it was a great turn out of around 40 people. We enjoyed seeing new audience members that we hadn't met before, who knew Will from the TV or personally, and many of them said they would love to attend our other events, now that they had seen what we could do!

Will was interviewed by Dick Johns, local actor and poet, about his new book 'The Old Man and the Sand Eel'. Although the overwhelming theme of the book is fishing, Will's biggest passion (apart from his six week old daughter who also attended the talk!), it is about so much more than that. He and Dick discussed his relationship with his Grandfather which ultimately cemented his love of fishing from an early age and went on to talk about male relationships in general, and the way in which people (but men especially) express emotions. There was also a lot of interest in the environmental side of fishing from the audience and the effect climate change is having on people like Will. As someone who lives, but was not born, in Cardiff, Will was keen to hear about the history of Cardiff's waterways from the audience, and expressed his own opinions about the flooding of Cardiff Bay. There was a great level of communication between Will and the audience at this event and everyone who attended said they thought he was a brilliant speaker.

Lots of the audience were keen to buy Will's book because he spoke about it so well, even if they weren't really interested in fishing as a hobby.

Once again, it was a great event, and thanks as always to the staff at Waterloo Tea for helping us out and letting us host events in their great cafe space!

We have signed copies of 'The Old Man and the Sand Eel' in the shop now.
