James Naughtie, one of Britain’s leading broadcasters, explores the country he has known for fifty years – its allure and its contradictions, its strengths and some painful legacies that weigh so heavily on its people.

With a perceptive eye and an elegant pen, he tells a spellbinding story that encompasses the Watergate scandal, the end of the Cold War, the cultural conflicts that swirled around the Clintons, the trauma of 9/11, and the transformational elections of Obama and Trump. This is a tale of high drama and hidden encounters – from Washington corridors to diners in dusty small towns, from the streets of New York down to country roads in the old South – infused with the insight of a master observer, whose voice is a beguiling guide to the mysteries of modern America.

Characters spring from every page: the poker fiend who played cards with Lyndon B. Johnson; the Kennedy matriarch in her nineties at home; the presidential candidates at moments of victory and defeat; the powerless and the bemused, like the lonely travellers on a night train from Chicago to New Orleans. This is the journey of a roving reporter, full of laughter, adventure and surprise.

On the Road is America revealed.

James Naughtie, special correspondent for BBC News, is one of the country's best-known broadcasters. He presented Today on BBC Radio 4 for twenty-one years, and has reported for the BBC from around the world for more than three decades. Alongside his journalism he has wide cultural interests, and has written and produced many documentaries on music and books, and presented concerts from across Europe for radio and television. On BBC Radio 4, he has hosted every edition of Bookclub since it began in 1998. James has been travelling in America since the 1970s - witnessing many of the important events that have shaped the country as it is today. On the Road is an account of his experiences, the places and people he has encountered, and the changes he has seen.

James will be speaking to Mel Griffin about On the Road as well as his varied career as special correspondent for BBC News, before taking questions from our virtual audience. Join us for what is sure to be a compelling event.
